Here is a quick recap of my life thus far . . . . . .
I was born in Madison, WI while my father completed his general surgery residency at Wisconsin. However, we moved to Columbus, Indiana when I was only 18 months old, where I spent my entire childhood and still to this day call "home". I graduated from Columbus North High School in 2002 and enjoyed those high school years as a year-round competitive tennis player. Eventually, DePauw University won my college decision and I enjoyed 4 years at this incredible liberal arts college in Greencastle, IN. DePauw taught me how to love learning and how to effectively communicate, socialize, and excel in all facets of my life. I joined the Sigma Chi fraternity, Xi Chapter, where I eventually served as vice president and philanthropy chairman. This experience educated me on peer leadership and living my life by a higher standard. I have found that many post-college experiences, in both business and life, require me to draw from the skills developed during my time at DePauw.
My first job took me to the University of Louisville to work in a neuropsychology lab with renowned professor, Dennis Molfese, where I coordinated a study on sleep deprivation in children. At the time, I intended to pursue a PhD in Psychology. However, I learned that my passion was on the business-side of working with people rather than on the neurological/scientific side. I took a summer to refocus myself by serving as the male counselor for a Counselor in Leadership Training program at Camp Tecumseh YMCA; a beloved place where I spent at least a week of my summers since the age of eight. While living in a cabin and teaching sixteen year old young men to be role models and counselors, the office of admission at my alma mater contacted me about a recruitment position. For over a year, I traveled the country recruiting students and applications for DePauw. I loved this job, the lifestyle, and working for an institution that I'm passionate about. However, my desire for greater income and proximity to a specific girl drove me to yet another career change (Compendium: a start-up software company co-founded by a DePauw grad and Columbus native) and move to Indianapolis.
Nine months after meeting Ashley Jaquess, I got on a knee and asked her to be my wife. I've never been more sure of anything in my life. We planned an unbelievable wedding in less than 6 months, which will forever be one of the most incredible days. During this same time, we bought our first home and began some renovation projects. Only a month into marriage, my father, Dr. Gregory Millis, unexpectedly died in his sleep due to cardiomyopathy, devastating my family. This tragedy is still a daily challenge and reminder of how fragile life can be. I mention my Dad's death here because it is formative part of who I am today. Tragedy, however, was soon followed by an unexpected joy; the creation of our first daughter, Mackenzie Anne Millis, born on December 14, 2010. This too, redefined my being and future paths. We quickly decided that Mackenzie needed to be a big sister. On April 13, 2012, Caroline Quinn Millis joined our family. Having children is the greatest joy in my life now and we hope to add one more little person to our family in mid-June, 2014.
Throughout these rapid changes in my personal life, my professional life remained steady and prosperous. Working for a start-up technology company gave me a unique business experience where I was able to impact a growing company and learn at a pace beyond what I could get at business school or with a larger organization. At Compendium, I discovered my skill for customer-centric sales, love of learning about other businesses and how to improve them, and desire to work in an entrepreneurial environment. My track record as a top performer and leader among my peers provided me the unique opportunity to step up and lead the sales division as the Director of Sales. In this role I learned the Lean Start-up management methodology and consistently practiced validated learning. I am forever grateful to the individuals who helped shape my successes at Compendium. Although I decided to move on to new challenges and opportunities in early 2012, I was elated to hear that Compendium was successfully acquired by software giant, Oracle in October, 2013. The hard work paid off for all of those who invested time and effort into Compendium.
In February of 2012, my original boss at Compendium contacted me about a unique opportunity at the consulting firm (ADVISA) where he now worked. Soon after this call, I met with the President, Heather Haas, to discuss the direction she was steering the firm. She wanted to expand the company roster and build out a new department focused on client service. It was a difficult decision to leave Compendium, but the company culture, vision for the future, and opportunity to work for a firm like ADVISA was too good to pass up. I spent a year learning the business and immersing myself in learning about behavioral science in the workplace (Predictive Index®), human capital analytics, talent acquisition, leadership development, organizational improvement and sales performance. Success began to grow in my new department and in early 2013 it was time to start building my team. I've enjoyed hiring my team, creating new systems for the firm, refining processes around best practice, and delivering client value every day. What I love most about ADVISA is the opportunity to learn about problems in wide array of businesses. Then, we help those companies understand and address the people-related issues that lie at the core of almost every business challenge. It is a perfect blend of my interests in psychology and business. I get to leverage all the skills I've learned in sales, management, and customer service on a daily basis. I am able to provide strategic direction to hundreds of businesses. And most importantly I get to have a direct impact on the growth and success of a fantastic small firm.
